Usha Sookai is an NYC-based journalist and singer-songwriter. A multi-tasker and hyphenated to the max, she’s also a graduate of New York University and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

As an Indo-Caribbean, lifelong New Yorker, Usha cares deeply about highlighting minority and underserved populations. She’s also a self-taught singer-songwriter. Find her work on Instagram.

She’s currently a Social Media Producer at The Real Deal. Previously, she interned at NBCUniversal, Foreign Policy Magazine, CNN, and NY1. She recently worked part-time as The New York Public Library’s Social Media Page and previously held production roles at National Geographic and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Current Projects

Usha directed, produced, shot, and edited a short documentary about two science researchers whose NIH funding was cut under the second Trump administration. She’s currently re-editing and expanding on this film, titled Death by a Thousand Cuts, to include stories of other scientists who have been impacted by the president’s new policies around science research, public funding, and DEI.
